The first written record on the oldest town of Novohrad region Filakovo (Fulek, Fileck) dates back to the year 1423 and it is historically connected with the strategic importance and the successive fall of the gothic castle (from year 1682), which is the most significant monument of the town until today. Not only history of the Filakovo castle raised the town and made it known, but also rich traditions and economical importance of guilds, crafts and succesively products of developing industrial productions of companies SFINX and KOVOSMALT made Filakovo one of the most visited touristic and business towns not only in Slovakia but also in the world. The 17th century, when the impressive personalities of the Novohrad history Tomas Bosnyak, Frantisek Wesselenyi and Stefan Kohary II. lived here is considered the most famous period of the town. Except the cultural monument Filakovo castle, tourists can visit here also interesting cultural monuments the Roman-Catholic church of the Coronation of the Virgin Mary, built in the years 1694-1727, the baroque Stefan Kohary's kuria-house from the half of the 18thcentury, built on the basis of the Bathory's kuria-house from the 17th century, the baroque-classical manor-house from the beginning of the 19th century (today grammar school), the classical Manor-house of Frantisek Cebrian from the year 1847 and also the Town museum, where rare archeological, historical, ethnographical and naturalistic collections are placed. The town Filakovo is connected also with the Slovak personalities of the Stúr generation, poet Alexander Karol Modrányi and brother of Ludovít Stúr, Ján Stúr. For tourism lovers there are prepared various cultural-study tourist programmes (walking tours) to the near Somoska castle including the National nature reserve and also places offering views to the surroundings as for expl. Karancs, Belina, Bucen.
